The Radiation Therapy Department at The Steeplechase Cancer Center at Somerset Medical Center features state-of-the-art linear accelerators that use the latest in computer technology and imaging to track and deliver high-energy X-rays with pinpoint accuracy. These X-rays destroy cancer cells while minimizing radiation to surrounding healthy tissue. The department also is equipped with the latest in simulation and planning equipment and software, which enables physicians and staff to generate a highly individualized and specialized plan to target your tumor.
Available therapies:
-
Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) - IMRT is an advanced mode of radiotherapy delivery. During treatment, “leaves” shape and modulate the radiation beam, sculpting it to the three-dimensional shape of a tumor. This technique enables more cancer-killing energy to be delivered to the tumor, while sparing normal structures that are very close to the target.
-
Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) - IGRT is an image-based technology that allows clinicians to locate and retarget to a tumor just before the delivery of radiation to compensate for any target movement.
-
Brachytherapy–Prostate Seed Implant Therapy - Brachytherapy is the placement of radioactive materials in body tissues or cavities. An example of this is Prostate Seed Implantation. This technique uses rice-sized radioactive “seeds,” which are placed into the prostate and emit low-energy X-rays to destroy tumors. They do not effect the rest of the body.
-
3-D External Beam Radiation - Used when treating larger areas and lymph nodes. This treatment method uses computers to create a three-dimensional picture of the target. Multiple radiation beams are then shaped to match the contour of the treatment area.
-
Stereotactic Radiosurgery - Performed with our new Novalis Tx linear accelerator, this treatment involves the use of high-dose radiation instead of traditional surgery for certain brain tumors.
-
RapidArc Radiotherapy - This therapy offers all of the benefits of tomotherapy (helical IMRT) in significantly shorter time with less radiation to the rest of the body.
A variety of case management and nutritional services also are available through The Steeplechase Cancer Center, Somerset Medical Center and outside agencies. These organizations are familiar with the impact of cancer on patients and their families.
